SMB software glossary
Plain-English definitions of the terms that come up when a small business shops for scheduling, security, listing and productivity software. Each is defined the way a buyer needs it, not the way a vendor markets it.

Scheduling
No-show rate. The share of booked appointments where the customer neither shows nor cancels in time to rebook. Commonly in the double digits for appointment businesses; the two proven levers to reduce it are confirmations/reminders and deposits.
Deposit / card-on-file. Holding a card or partial payment at booking so the customer has a financial reason to show or cancel early. Native in Square and Setmore; via integrations in Calendly.
Round-robin / routing. Distributing incoming bookings across several staff or reps. A team-tier feature in Calendly and cal.com.
Security & monitoring
Dark-web / breach monitoring. A service that watches breach corpuses and paste sites for your addresses or records and alerts you when one appears. It is early warning, not removal, nothing deletes data already circulating.
Domain Search. HIBP's paid tier that monitors every email address on a domain you control, rather than one address at a time. From $4.39/month for one domain.
Infostealer. Malware that harvests saved passwords and active session cookies. Because it can steal an authenticated session, it can bypass MFA, which is why monitoring still matters even with MFA on.
Item 1.05 8-K. The U.S. SEC form item public companies use to disclose a material cybersecurity incident. Relevant to third-party/vendor risk (has a public supplier disclosed a breach?), not to monitoring your own credentials.
MFA (multi-factor authentication). Requiring a second factor beyond a password. Strongly recommended by NIST SP 800-63B, but not a substitute for breach monitoring.
Marketplace listings
Etsy tags. The 13 keyword phrases attached to a listing. Using all 13 with multi-word phrases is basic Etsy SEO hygiene.
Listing quality / conversion score. How well a listing turns views into sales. Clicks without sales suppress ranking, so conversion is part of SEO, not separate from it.
Product research vs listing optimization. Research tools (eRank, Marmalead, Helium 10, Jungle Scout) find keywords and opportunities; optimization is writing the title, tags and copy that act on them. Different jobs, sometimes different tools.
A/B experiment (Amazon). Testing two versions of a listing to measure real lift. Amazon's Manage Your Experiments is the primary way to validate changes instead of trusting a ranking guarantee.
Productivity
Kanban. A board of columns (to-do / doing / done) with cards you drag across. Trello's core model; available as a view in ClickUp and Asana.
Dependency. A task that can't start until another finishes. A reason to move from a spreadsheet to a dedicated tool.
Automation audit. Reviewing recurring workflows to find repetitive work worth automating, a step after you've chosen where tasks live, not a task manager itself.
